Why beautiful rooms sound terrible
A tropical interior is an acoustician's worst case: polished concrete, terrazzo, stone, full-height glass sliders, double-height ceilings and almost no soft furnishing. Sound has nothing to land on, so it bounces. Guests raise their voices, the room gets louder still, and a restaurant that looks calm becomes exhausting after twenty minutes.


Reverberation
Hard rooms hold sound for 1.5–2.5 seconds. Every new syllable arrives on top of the last one, so speech turns to mush and music loses definition.
The Lombard effect
People instinctively speak louder in noise. In an untreated dining room this feedback loop can add 6–10 dB(A) between an empty room and a full one.
Speech intelligibility
Absorption raises the signal-to-noise ratio at each table and desk. Staff stop shouting orders and guests stop leaning across the table.
Open-plan distraction
In open offices and coworking floors, intelligible chatter from neighbouring desks is the single biggest reported productivity killer. Absorption plus screens breaks the path.
Video calls
Microphones pick up the reverberant tail, not just the voice. A treated meeting room sounds close and dry on the far end of the call.
Mechanical noise
Split units, ducted fan-coils, extract fans and ceiling fans run all year here. Absorption lowers the reverberant build-up they create in a hard shell.
NRC, RT60 and how much you actually need
Two numbers run this conversation. NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient) is how much sound a panel absorbs, from 0.00 (a mirror) to 1.00 (an open window). RT60 is how long it takes sound to decay by 60 dB in your room. We select and quantify panels to move RT60 into the range the space is used for — international practice rather than any single national code.
Thickness drives NRC
9 mm (0.35 in) PET felt typically reads around NRC 0.35; 12 mm (0.47 in) around 0.45; 24 mm (0.94 in) around 0.70. Baffles and rafts, absorbing on both faces, reach 0.85–0.95.
The air gap is free absorption
Mounting the same panel on 25–50 mm (1–2 in) battens instead of flat to the wall lifts low-frequency performance measurably. We detail the cavity, not just the panel.
Coverage rule of thumb
Most hard rooms need 15–30% of their total surface area treated; a bare concrete restaurant may need 30–40% of the ceiling plane. We calculate it from your plan, not from a catalogue page.
Ceiling first, then walls
The ceiling is usually the largest uninterrupted surface and the cheapest to treat. Walls follow, at seated ear height and on the first reflection points.
Absorbing is not blocking
Panels reduce reverberation and noise build-up inside a room. Stopping sound passing to the next room is a separate problem solved with mass, isolation and sealing — we will tell you which one you have.
Scatter as well as absorb
3D relief, slats and parametric CNC surfaces diffuse reflections instead of only killing them, which keeps a room lively rather than dead — important in dining and music spaces.

Why PET felt, and not fabric-wrapped mineral wool
The classic acoustic panel is glass or mineral wool inside a fabric sleeve. In year-round 70–90% humidity, salt air and constant air-conditioning cycles, that build-up is a liability. Polyester felt is the reason we specify what we specify.
Non-hygroscopic
PET fibre does not soak up airborne moisture, so panels do not sag, smell or lose performance through the monsoon season.
Mould gives it nothing
No organic binder and no paper facing means no food source for mould or mildew on the panel face — a real failure mode for fibrous panels near the coast.
No loose fibres
Thermally bonded felt does not shed irritant fibres into the air stream, which matters directly above open kitchens, buffets and desks.
Condensation tolerance
Ceiling rafts sit below chilled slabs and near diffusers. Felt handles the odd cold surface far better than a paper-faced or fabric-wrapped board.
Recycled content
Up to 75% recycled fibre, formaldehyde-free and low-VOC — the specification most hotel and workplace sustainability briefs are now asking for.
Impact and cleaning
Dense felt takes knocks in circulation zones, cleans with a vacuum brush or damp cloth, and can be replaced panel by panel rather than wall by wall.

Standards commonly held on these material platforms — the exact certificate set is confirmed per material and per project, and technical data sheets are supplied with the specification.

Acoustic panels are a dry fit-out. That is why they are the usual choice for a venue that has to reopen on Friday, or a completed villa where the owners have already moved in.
Direct fixing
Adhesive or concealed clips onto flat, dry board and plaster — the fastest method for wall panels in dry rooms.
Battened cavity
Aluminium or timber battens level the wall and create the 25–50 mm (1–2 in) air gap that lifts low-frequency absorption.

What clients and designers ask before an acoustic order.
How much do acoustic panels cost?
Price on request. Cost depends on the system family, felt thickness, finish and the treated area — a printed ceiling raft and a plain 9 mm wall panel are not comparable items. Send the room dimensions, the surfaces and how the space is used, and we will return a specification with quantities and a quote.
What is NRC, and what value should I be looking for?
NRC is the Noise Reduction Coefficient: the average share of sound energy a material absorbs, from 0.00 to 1.00. Thin 9 mm (0.35 in) felt sits around 0.35, 24 mm (0.94 in) around 0.70, and double-sided baffles and rafts reach 0.85–0.95. Higher is not automatically better — what matters is total absorption area against your target reverberation time.
Will acoustic panels soundproof my room?
No, and it is the most common misunderstanding. Panels absorb sound inside a room, reducing echo, reverberation and noise build-up. Stopping sound travelling to the neighbouring apartment or bedroom is sound insulation, which needs mass, decoupling and sealed junctions. We will tell you which problem you actually have before quoting anything.
How much of the room needs to be covered?
As a rule of thumb, 15–30% of the total surface area of a hard room, and up to 30–40% of the ceiling plane in bare concrete restaurants and double-height villa living spaces. We calculate the required absorption area from your plan against a target reverberation time rather than guessing a panel count.
Do PET panels survive the humidity in Phuket?
Yes — that is exactly why we specify them. Polyester felt is non-hygroscopic, has no organic binder for mould to feed on, and does not sag or shed fibres in year-round high humidity and constant air-conditioning cycles, unlike fabric-wrapped mineral wool or paper-faced boards.
What sizes and thicknesses are available?
The usual production formats are 1220 × 2440 mm (48 × 96 in) sheets in 9, 12 and 24 mm (0.35, 0.47 and 0.94 in), slat panels around 2400 × 600 mm (94.5 × 23.6 in) and ceiling baffles around 1200 × 300 mm (47 × 12 in). Custom sizes, shapes and cut-outs are produced to your drawings without a fixed module.
Can panels carry our branding or artwork?
Yes. Digital printing onto the acoustic face covers artwork, photography, brand identity, wayfinding, patterns and material imitations. Colour matching, custom shapes and CNC-cut logos are also standard production options.
Are they approved for hotels, restaurants and offices?
Fire-classified options are available — ASTM E84 and EN 13501-1 Class B are the classifications most often held on these materials, alongside OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, GREENGUARD Gold and GRS recycled-content certification. The exact certificate set is confirmed per material and supplied with the specification.
How are the panels installed, and can it be done in a working venue?
Direct adhesive or clip fixing to flat substrates, battens where a levelling layer and air cavity are wanted, and wires or tracks for suspended rafts, baffles and acoustic luminaires. It is a dry trade with no curing time, so ceiling elements can be installed overnight or between services without closing the venue.
Can I see samples first?
Yes. We send physical felt swatches, colour palettes, timber slat samples and finish options before any order, and prepare a selection against your lighting conditions and the rest of the finishes schedule.
What is the difference between acoustic panels and decorative wall panels?
Acoustic panels are engineered to absorb sound energy and are specified by NRC and coverage area. Decorative panels are chosen for surface, texture and speed of installation — stone, travertine, WPC, PU or marble looks — and generally reflect sound rather than absorb it. Most projects use both: see decorative wall panels for the surface side of the package.
