Non-standard custom chandelier in bronze finish with cast glass, made to order by RODESIGNE

Complex Lighting Projects: How We Build Non-Standard Fixtures

5 min reading time

A real case study: bespoke chandeliers up to 190×310 cm and pendants up to 120 cm in diameter, engineered from scratch, produced in 30+ days and delivered by air freight in 10 days.

In short. Custom lighting is never just fixture selection. On complex projects it means full bespoke manufacturing, precise engineering and tight deadlines:

  • Fully bespoke production from client references and drawings
  • Shop drawings and structural detailing for every single fixture
  • Lead time from 30 calendar days; air freight delivery in 10 days when the programme demands it
  • Headline pieces up to 190×310 cm (75×122 in), pendants up to 120 cm (47 in) in diameter

Below is how RODESIGNE runs a project like this, stage by stage, on a real order.

The brief: reference-level quality, no compromises

The client came with a large order for fully bespoke manufacturing. The reference set was drawn from premium European and American design houses — sculptural floor lamps, paper-shade table lamps, architectural metronome-style uplights and multi-tier cast-glass chandeliers.

The anchor pieces were large chandeliers: metal in a bronze finish, cast glass, overall dimensions up to 190×310 cm (75×122 in). The package also included pendants up to 120 cm (47 in) in diameter, floor lamps, table lamps and multi-tier chandeliers.

The requirement was not visual resemblance. It was material quality, build quality and light quality at the level of the references — which is a very different engineering problem. If you are starting from a photo or a sketch rather than a brand reference, see how we build a fixture from a photo or a sketch.

Stage 1. Fast sampling and approvals

Speed is critical on projects like this, so physical samples are produced and shipped early — usually by air.

  • Metal samples in several finishes (bronze, brass, chrome)
  • Stone and alabaster samples
  • Glass and cast crystal options
  • Technical proposals for the light sources and drivers
  • Visual sign-off by photo and video

This lets the client lock decisions before production starts and avoids expensive corrections at a late stage. For tropical projects we also confirm finish behaviour up front: high humidity and salt air near the coast will attack an unprotected brass or bronze finish, so the sample stage includes the protective coating we intend to use.

Stage 2. Engineering and shop drawings

Once samples are approved, the RODESIGNE team moves into detailed engineering. Nothing goes into production without drawings.

  • Shop drawings for every individual fixture
  • Frame and suspension construction
  • Fixing details into ceilings and structural slabs
  • Wiring and connection diagrams
  • Setting-out dimensions for drivers and canopies
  • Installation options for restricted-access conditions

Every node gets worked through — especially with heavy pieces, non-standard geometry and double-height ceilings. On villa projects a 190×310 cm chandelier over a void is a structural item as much as a decorative one: the fixing detail has to be coordinated with the slab and the reinforcement, not improvised on site.

Stage 3. Bespoke production

Manufacturing non-standard fixtures takes on average from 30 calendar days, depending on the complexity of the construction and the number of positions.

  • Metal frames are fabricated
  • Metal is finished and treated
  • Glass and alabaster elements are prepared
  • Light modules are assembled
  • Pre-assembly and test-lighting is carried out in the workshop

Live photos and video go out from the workshop regularly, so the client follows the build rather than waiting for a delivery note. Anything with an outdoor or semi-outdoor location — sala, terrace, pool edge — is specified with the appropriate IP rating and marine-grade hardware at this stage.

Stage 4. Packing and express delivery

With a compressed programme, the closing stage was handled as follows:

  • Full document set prepared for export
  • Pieces crated for air freight, with cast glass and alabaster packed separately
  • Delivery completed in 10 days

The project is confidential, so no on-site photography is available — what we can show is production photography, drawings, renders and examples of the assemblies and details we built.

What a complex lighting project actually requires

  • A precise reading of the design intent
  • A real engineering base, not a workshop that copies shapes
  • Experience with non-standard materials — cast glass, alabaster, stone, solid brass
  • The ability to deliver on a compressed programme
  • Transparent communication throughout

RODESIGNE specialises in complex, non-standard and technically demanding lighting projects — the ones where compromise is not on the table. For budgeting and scheduling before you commit, see our breakdown of custom light fixture cost and timeline.

FAQ

What is the minimum lead time?
From 30 calendar days for bespoke production. Complex multi-tier pieces and large glass or alabaster components take longer; sampling runs in parallel and adds little to the critical path.

How large can a single fixture be?
On this project the headline chandeliers reached 190×310 cm (75×122 in) and pendants 120 cm (47 in) in diameter. Larger is possible — the limits are structural fixing, transport and installation access, all of which we resolve at the drawing stage.

Can you match a specific reference?
We work to your references for form, material and light quality, and produce an original engineered piece to your dimensions. Send photos, sketches or a mood board and we will come back with a technical proposal.

Do you handle installation details?
Yes. Fixing details, wiring diagrams, driver and canopy setting-out and restricted-access installation methods are all part of the drawing package handed to the site team.

How do you ship to island and remote sites?
Air freight for compressed programmes, sea freight when the schedule allows. Cast glass, alabaster and stone elements are crated separately, and we allow for humidity and handling on the last mile.

Need a non-standard fixture for your project?

Send references, dimensions and your deadline — we will prepare samples, engineering and a costed proposal for bespoke manufacturing. RODESIGNE designs & manufactures custom lighting for villas, hotels and restaurants — Phuket & worldwide.
