Fitness Club Lighting: Lux Levels Zone by Zone

Target illuminance for every zone of a fitness club: gym and cardio 300–400 lx, studio 300 lx, pool 200–300 lx at water level (IP65, glare-free), changing rooms 200 lx with 300–500 lx at mirrors, sauna 100–150 lx warm, reception 300–500 lx. Plus UGR ≤ 19, IP ratings, colour temperature and emergency lighting.

In short: a fitness club is not one room but a dozen different zones, and each has its own light level and its own requirements. Working targets: gym and cardio floor 300–400 lx, group studio 300 lx, pool 200–300 lx at water level, changing rooms 200 lx (up to 500 lx at mirrors), sauna and spa 100–150 lx of soft light, reception 300–500 lx. The two technical requirements that decide whether the club feels good are glare control (low UGR) — so nothing dazzles someone lying on a bench — and the right IP rating around water, showers and sauna. How fitness lighting differs from ordinary interior lighting

Light in a club does three jobs at once: it delivers the illuminance needed to train, it keeps people safe around water and in wet areas, and it sets the mood — energising in the halls, calming in the spa.

Three requirements you will not meet in a home or office

  • Glare control (low UGR): in training halls people look upwards constantly — lying on a bench, stretching, floating on their back in the pool. The source must not be in the field of view
  • IP protection: around the pool, in showers, sauna and hammam you need IP44–IP65 fittings rated for moisture, steam and splashing
  • Energy and recovery: in the gym light activates (neutral 4000 K); in changing rooms and spa it calms (warm 2700–3000 K)

Why lighting is the wrong place to save money in fitness

  • Dim or flickering light reads as "cheap" and puts people off on the first visit
  • Glare on water and on mirrors is both uncomfortable and a safety risk
  • Poor CRI distorts skin tone in the changing-room mirror — members see themselves looking unwell
  • Good light in the halls and pool is free content: members photograph it and post it

A club runs 14–16 hours a day, so fitting life and efficiency pay back unusually fast here.

Zone by zone: targets and techniques

We break the club into its key zones — each has its own lux target, colour temperature and fitting type. Values follow international practice (EN 12464-1 targets for sports and wellness spaces); the final figures come from a calculation for your specific geometry and finishes.

Gym and cardio floor

The working heart of the club needs bright, even light of 300–400 lx with no dark patches and no glare. Neutral 4000 K is optimal: it energises and keeps people alert. The key rule is glare control — someone on a bench or a cardio machine is looking up, so the source needs a diffuser or a deep recess (low UGR). Rows of linear fittings or track give the most even wash.

Group fitness studio

Yoga, stretching, cycling and HIIT all want different moods, so the light here is scene-based and dimmable. The base target is 300 lx for intense classes; for yoga and stretching the level drops to a soft 100–150 lx with a warm tone. One room, several scenes on the controller: a bright energising mode and an intimate, calm one.

Pool and wet zone

The most demanding zone for both safety and hardware. The target is 200–300 lx at water level, but the absence of glare matters more: light must not dazzle a swimmer on their back and must not mirror off the surface, which would stop a lifeguard seeing the bottom. Fittings must be sealed (IP65) and resistant to chlorine and humidity. Warm or neutral 3000–4000 K, often with architectural lighting of the pool shell.

Changing rooms, showers, sauna and spa

This is where members assess themselves in the mirror and where they unwind — so the light is warm and flattering. In the changing room the general level is 200 lx, while mirrors need 300–500 lx of even frontal light at CRI 90+ so skin and colours read naturally. Showers need IP44–IP65. Sauna and hammam take a soft 100–150 lx of warm 2700 K light in heat- and moisture-rated fittings, often with concealed lighting under the benches.

Safety, efficiency and the usual mistakes

Safety and energy

A club burns 14–16 hours a day, and water and stairs demand emergency provision:

  • Emergency and escape lighting at the pool, on stairs and at exits — mandatory
  • IP protection around water, in showers and sauna — a safety question, not a comfort one
  • Presence detection in changing rooms, corridors and WCs — light only when occupied
  • High-efficacy, long-life fittings — they pay back on a 14/7 duty cycle
  • One control system carrying the scenes across the whole club

A note for tropical projects

In Phuket and comparable climates, humidity is the deciding factor rather than an edge case. Wet zones stay wet: specify IP65 as the default around pools and IP44 as the floor in any shower or changing area, and choose marine-grade stainless or brass fixings within a few hundred metres of the sea. Air-conditioned halls next to open-air pool decks create condensation on cold fitting bodies — sealed housings and correct gasket specification matter more here than in a temperate climate. Emergency lighting also needs to survive monsoon-season power dips, so central-battery or self-test fittings are worth the budget line.

Five mistakes in fitness club lighting

  • Bare bright light with no glare control — it dazzles on the bench and in stretching
  • Glare on the pool water — discomfort plus a safety risk
  • Cold "clinical" light in the changing room — poor CRI, skin looks unhealthy
  • Ordinary fittings near water and in sauna — they fail quickly under moisture and heat
  • One single mode for the whole group studio — no difference between yoga and HIIT
