Bollards 300–1100 mm high with downward-directed light: they wash the surface and do not glare, set at 3–5 m centres. Where the design wants nothing visible, use in-ground fittings within the paving or marker lighting in the step risers instead.

With an in-ground uplight or a spike spot at the base, aimed upward: a narrow 15–25° beam for a trunk, a wide 40–60° beam for a canopy. Keep the colour temperature at 2700–3000 K. Light 3–5 key specimens rather than every plant — alternating light and darkness is what gives a night garden depth. Spike spots can be repositioned as the planting grows, which matters in a climate where growth is fast.

Around water, in the ground and near children's areas use low voltage at 12/24 V — safer and simpler to install. For long runs and taller park poles use 230 V. Most private gardens end up hybrid: 230 V to the drive and pole lanterns, 24 V to in-ground and underwater fittings. Transformers go in sealed, ventilated enclosures with about 20% spare capacity.

IP65 as a minimum in the open, for driving rain, irrigation and dust. IP67 for anything recessed into soil or paving. IP68 for pools, ponds and fountains. Bodies in die-cast aluminium with powder coating, or 316 stainless steel and brass where salt air is a factor. Drivers are sized for a +50 °C ambient.

Yes, if they are specified for it rather than bought on price. The failure points here are gaskets, cable glands, buried joints and fixings — not the LED. We use marine-grade materials near the coast, resin-filled joints, conduit that termites cannot chew, and drained gravel beds under in-ground fittings so they are not sitting in a puddle for six months.

Yes, where a cable is expensive or impossible: far boundary paths, a jetty, a remote corner of the plot. Modern autonomous fittings of 15–60 W with a battery and motion sensor run through the night. For the main zones of a garden a cabled network is still more stable, especially through a long rainy season with limited sun.

It means aiming light at the object rather than the sky: shielded optics, glare cowls, accurate focus. Practically, it keeps spill out of bedrooms and neighbouring plots, protects nesting beaches, gives you a night sky worth looking at, and draws far fewer insects onto the terrace.

It depends on the area and the number of zones: the budget is made up of fittings, poles, cabling, controls and installation. All series are quoted on request. We supply direct from the factories rather than through distributors, and our studio does the layout so you are not buying fittings you do not need. Send a site plan and we will price the package.

For anything from roughly 600–1000 m² upward, yes. The design fixes zones, fixture positions, the supply route and the control strategy before earthworks. That is far cheaper than re-laying cable after the paths are paved and the planting is in. When the lighting is supplied through RODESIGNE, the design fee is credited against the order.
