In short: these are two ways to control how bright your lights are. TRIAC is classic dimming over the power line: a dimmer replaces the wall switch — simple and inexpensive. DALI is a digital protocol: every fixture gets its own address and is controlled individually, and groups become scenes like “morning”, “evening” and “movie”. For a couple of rooms TRIAC is enough; for a villa, hotel or restaurant that lives on scenes, DALI is the answer. Why dim the lights at all

The same interior needs different light in the morning and at night: 100% brightness for cleaning — and 20% of warm light for dinner. Dimming turns one set of fixtures into several different “rooms”.

What brightness control gives you

  • Scenes that follow your day: work light, evening light, night light, guests
  • Atmosphere: soft, warm, dimmed light is the single best tool for coziness
  • Savings: a fixture running at 50% brightness draws noticeably less power — and adds less heat for your air conditioning to fight in a tropical climate
  • Lifespan: LEDs and drivers running below full power last longer

Why you can't “just install a dimmer”

The number one source of disappointment: an LED fixture is not dimmed directly — it is dimmed through its driver, the power supply inside. If the driver was not designed for dimming, or is not compatible with your dimmer, the light will flicker, buzz or refuse to switch off completely. That is why fixtures and the control system are chosen together — at the design stage, not after the fit-out is finished.

The words “dimmable”, “TRIAC dim” or “DALI” in a fixture's spec sheet refer to its driver — always check them before buying.

How TRIAC and DALI work

Both make light brighter or softer — but they are built in fundamentally different ways.

TRIAC: dimming over the power line

TRIAC (phase-cut dimming) is the most familiar method: a rotary or touch dimmer takes the place of the wall switch and “trims” the voltage fed to the fixture. No extra wiring — it works over the existing power line, which is why TRIAC is often added even after a renovation is complete.

  • Simple: a dimmer instead of a switch, no extra wires
  • Affordable: the cheapest way to dim
  • Limitation: one line = one group of lights, no individual addressing
  • Critical: the fixture's driver must support TRIAC dimming
  • Caveat: cheap pairings flicker, and the minimum brightness is often 10-20% instead of 1%

DALI: a digital lighting protocol

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is the international standard for digital lighting control. Alongside the power wiring, a thin two-wire control bus runs to the fixtures. Every fixture gets an address: you can change the brightness of any single light, combine them into groups and scenes, and regroup the lighting later — in software, without touching the walls.

  • Addressing: up to 64 devices per line, each controlled individually
  • Scenes: “morning”, “evening”, “movie” — one button or your phone
  • Flexibility: lighting groups are changed in software, not by rewiring
  • Smoothness: true dimming down to 1% with no flicker
  • DALI DT8: controls both brightness and color temperature (tunable white)

What to choose: condo, villa, restaurant

The rule is simple: the more zones and scenes, the more sense a digital protocol makes. TRIAC is great where there are one or two lighting groups; DALI shines on projects where there is a lot of light and it lives by scenes.

  • Condo or apartment with 2-3 zones: TRIAC — sufficient and budget-friendly
  • Apartment with lots of light and scenes: DALI, or wireless systems such as Casambi
  • Private villa: DALI — flexibility for years ahead and integration with smart-home systems (KNX)
  • Restaurant, hotel, office: DALI is the de-facto standard — scenes by time of day, by zone and by event
  • LED strips and cove lighting: make sure the driver protocol matches along the whole line

  • Wiring: TRIAC — standard power wiring; DALI — plus a 2-wire bus (installed before finishing)
  • Addressing: TRIAC — the whole group at once; DALI — every fixture individually

Four mistakes that make lights flicker and drive you mad

Almost every dimming problem comes from this list:

  • A dimmable dimmer + a non-dimmable fixture: flicker, or light that never fully switches off
  • A TRIAC dimmer not matched to the driver: buzzing, visible brightness steps, a narrow dimming range
  • Mixed protocols on one line: some fixtures obey, some don't
  • Control designed after the fit-out: the DALI bus can no longer be run without opening finished walls

What is the difference between DALI and TRIAC in plain English?

TRIAC controls light over the power wire: the dimmer “trims” the voltage and the whole line of fixtures changes brightness together. DALI is a digital protocol with a separate control bus: every fixture has an address and is controlled individually, and groups become scenes. TRIAC is simple and cheap; DALI is flexible and scalable.

Can any LED fixture be dimmed?

No. An LED fixture dims through its driver, and the driver must support it: look for “dimmable”, “TRIAC dim”, “DALI” or “1-10V” in the specs. A non-dimmable fixture on a dimmer will flicker or never switch off completely.

Why do lights flicker when dimmed?

Most often it is incompatibility: a non-dimmable driver, an unmatched “TRIAC dimmer + driver” pair, or too small a load on the dimmer. The cure is a compatible driver or a different dimmer — and ideally testing the pairing on a sample before you buy.

Do I need DALI in an ordinary apartment or condo?

With two or three lighting groups — no, TRIAC is enough. DALI makes sense when there is a lot of light and you want scenes: a large open-plan kitchen-living room, concealed cove lighting, track systems, control from your phone. For a finished renovation, wireless systems such as Casambi give you addressing without running a bus.

How much more expensive is DALI?

The fixtures' drivers cost more (typically 20-50% over basic ones), plus a controller and scene keypads. On a large project part of the difference pays itself back: fewer power lines and switches, and regrouping the lighting later needs no rewiring.

What is tunable white, and what does DALI DT8 have to do with it?

Tunable white fixtures change their color temperature: cooler and more energizing in the morning, warmer and calmer at night. DALI DT8 is the device type within the DALI protocol that controls both brightness and color temperature of a single fixture. It is widely used in homes, offices, hotels and spas.
