Why one chandelier is not enough

A central chandelier gives flat, even light — and kills the atmosphere: the sofa zone is overlit while the worktop sits in the shadow of your own hands. An open-plan room is lit in layers and zones, each for its own task.

The island and bar zone

The island is the visual centre of an open-plan space, so its light is both functional and decorative. Hang a row of pendants 70-80 cm (28-31 in) above the countertop: they light the surface and act as the jewellery of the room. For serious prep on the island, add concealed functional light as well.

The dining table

Over the table — a warm, intimate accent of 200-300 lux that gathers the family. Hang the pendant or chandelier 70-90 cm (28-35 in) above the tabletop, with a diameter roughly one third narrower than the table. This light always sits on its own dimmer: dinner calls for a glow, not a bright ceiling.

The sofa zone

Here the light is soft and diffused — 100-150 lux of ambient plus 300-500 lux of local reading light. Floor lamps, wall lights, table lamps and concealed cove lighting do the work. This is the zone that switches the whole space into evening mode, when the bright kitchen light is off and the terrace doors are open.

Scenes, circuits and typical mistakes

Scenes on dimmers

Split the space into lighting circuits, then combine them into one-touch scenes:

  • "Cooking" — bright work zone and island, living area dimmed
  • "Dinner" — warm accent over the table, kitchen almost off
  • "Guests / evening" — decorative and concealed light, minimal background
  • "Clean-up" — full bright light in every zone
  • "TV / relax" — only the sofa zone and cove lighting

The minimum is 3-4 separate dimmed circuits; the maximum is full scene control through a smart-home system or DALI.
