Three rules of facade light

At night a house is seen differently: light decides what to show and what to hide. That is exactly what lighting designers use.

Reveal, don't flood

The task of facade lighting is to reveal the architecture: the rhythm of windows, cornices, texture, the entrance. A facade evenly blasted by one floodlight looks flat, like a stage backdrop. Contrast does the work: lit verticals and details against calm dark planes.

Temperature follows the facade material

Warm 2700-3000 K light brings stone, brick, timber and warm render to life. Neutral 3500-4000 K is acceptable on white and grey modern facades, concrete and metal. Cold 5000-6500 K on a home is almost always a mistake — the villa turns industrial.

Light the house, not the windows or the sky

Open upward beams pollute the sky and glare into upper-floor bedrooms. Proper facade optics means narrow controlled beams, shields and precise focusing: light ends where the architecture ends.

The four techniques — with numbers

Almost every beautiful night facade is assembled from these four tools.

Technique 1. Up-down beams on the facade rhythm

Up-down wall lights are the base tool of a private villa: vertical "candles" of light between the windows set the rhythm and make the house taller. Mount them on the piers at 180-250 cm (6-8 ft), spaced to the window rhythm.

  • Beam angles 10-25° — crisp verticals; 30-60° — soft cones

Technique 2. Floodwash and grazing light on texture

Floodwashing is soft light on a plane from in-ground or offset floodlights. And if the facade is textured — stone, brick, rough render — grazing works magic: the fixture sits 15-30 cm (6-12 in) from the wall, light slides up the surface and turns texture into relief.

  • Floodwash: 24-36 W floodlights from 1-3 m (3-10 ft), beam 40-60°
  • Grazing: in-ground fixtures 15-30 cm (6-12 in) off the wall, 10-25° beam straight up
  • The closer the fixture to the wall, the more dramatic the texture shadows
  • For tall walls — linear fixtures along the base

Technique 3. Accents: entrance, columns, cornices

Point accents pull the composition together: the entrance is the brightest spot (this is where people arrive), columns and pilasters take narrow beams, cornices take linear light. On classic villas the fixtures themselves become accents — copper lanterns by the door that age beautifully, even in salt air.

  • Entrance: a pair of wall lights at 160-170 cm (63-67 in) — the brightest point of the facade

Technique 4. Large buildings: scenes and dynamics

For hotels, resorts and commercial buildings the same techniques scale up and gain control: DMX-512 drives hundreds of fixtures, and scenes change the building's image — weekday, celebration, late-night standby. This is how resort facades, office buildings and city landmarks are lit.
