What backlit stone actually is

There is no magic glowing rock. A thin layer of natural stone is mounted on a translucent substrate and an LED array sits behind it. The light travels through the stone and reveals its veins and texture, turning the surface into a light feature. Switch the LED off and you simply have a beautiful stone panel.

How it is built

The core is a thin stone slice, or an ultra-thin stone veneer, on a light-transmitting backing with an LED strip behind it. Power is safe extra-low voltage — 24 V with a driver and dimming; colour temperature is chosen warm (3000K) or neutral (4000K). The surface is finished to be moisture- and stain-resistant, and the LEDs must stay replaceable. Natural stone weighs about 55 kg/m2, so large panels are engineered with the load in mind.

What a tropical climate changes

  • Drivers and connections must be sealed and ventilated — monsoon humidity plus air conditioning means condensation inside the cavity

  • Salt air corrodes the sub-frame — use marine-grade stainless or powder-coated aluminium, not mild steel
  • Leave a service hatch: replacing a strip in five years should not mean removing the stone
  • Adhesives and resins behave differently at 80-90% relative humidity — use systems rated for it
