Smart Lighting and Scenes: What You Actually Need at Home

Smart lighting is not an app-controlled bulb but scene control: one button changes brightness, colour temperature and groups. The five scenes people actually use, wired vs wireless, and why four to six scenes beat forty.

What smart lighting actually is

Not “a bulb with an app” but a lighting control system: light responds to scenes, schedules, sensors and voice. The real value is the scene — one press changes brightness and groups to suit what you are doing.

What it is made of

The scenes people actually use

Scenes are the whole point. This is the base set that gets pressed daily — everything beyond it tends to be configured once and never touched.

Morning and daytime

Presence simulation is worth more in a holiday villa than in a permanent home, simply because the building stands empty for months. Pair it with sensors on the outdoor circuits, and specify those fittings at IP65 or better — driving rain and salt air will find any weak gasket within a season.

How to implement it

With and without renovation

  • During a renovation — wired DALI, KNX or Casambi: reliable, perfectly smooth dimming down to 1%, and no dependence on a mesh network
  • Without renovation — Zigbee and smart lamps installed on the existing wiring
  • Cost — as a rough ratio, a wireless retrofit for a studio costs a fraction of a full wired system; a wired DALI or KNX installation across a three-bedroom villa typically runs three to five times the wireless equivalent, and most of that is labour and first fix rather than hardware

The decision is almost always made by the construction programme, not the budget: if the walls are open, wire it. If they are closed, wireless is the only sane answer.

Common mistakes

  • A zoo of protocols from different manufacturers with no single controller
  • Cheap lamps that flicker and have CRI below 80 — see why Ra 90+ matters
  • No physical scene keypad, so guests and cleaners cannot use the lighting at all
  • Everything tied to the internet with no local control — a genuine problem anywhere the power and the connection both drop during a storm
  • Too many scenes: past six, nobody remembers what the buttons do

Plan separate circuit groups and scenes at design stage. Retrofitting them costs several times more than getting the grouping right on the drawing, and some things — a cove circuit, a separate accent group — simply cannot be added later without opening the ceiling.

What is smart lighting?

How many scenes do I actually need?
Four to six per main room: morning, day, evening, film or dinner, and away. Beyond that people stop using the system and go back to the switch.

Anything specific to a tropical villa?
Three things: local rather than cloud control, because power and connectivity both fail in storms; daylight sensors rather than fixed schedules, because monsoon light swings enormously; and IP65 or higher on every outdoor fitting and sensor.
